The 2021 Taiwan Medical Technology Exhibition opened today (2nd). Given the global surge in aging, display manufacturers are optimistic about the huge market opportunities in the medical and health industries. This year, a special “Smart Medical Display Technology Scenario” has been set up at the exhibition, bringing together companies such as Innolux (3481), AU Optronics (2409) subsidiary Datang, E Ink Holdings (8069), Rayson, GIS Group, and Datang (6120) to showcase application examples.
At the “2021 Taiwan Medical Technology Exhibition,” which runs for four days starting today, the Taiwan Display Industry Association (TDUA) is showcasing the “IDB Ministry of Economic Affairs Industrial Development Bureau Smart Hospital Display Technology Application Pavilion” under the theme of “Smart Display Technology Application in Smart Hospitals.” Nine member companies, including Innolux, Datang, E Ink, Rayson Optoelectronics, GIS Group, DaYun Precision, EVE Energy (4153), Renown Information Technology, and DiShang Technology, have created six scenario-based environments: waiting room, examination room, ward, operating room, checkout & medication dispensing, and epidemic prevention. The pavilion showcases 35 medical display technology-related solutions, aiming to demonstrate Taiwan’s integrated smart display application systems and technological capabilities, establish a domestic smart healthcare field model, increase the international visibility of Taiwan’s display technology applications in the smart healthcare industry, and expand industry exports.
To accelerate the commercialization of emerging display technology supply chains and identify new blue ocean business opportunities, the Industrial Development Bureau of the Ministry of Economic Affairs established the “Smart Display Industry Cross-Domain Cooperation Alliance (SDIA)” this year. This alliance promotes cross-domain cooperation among domestic display components, panels, system integration and application services industries, and responds to the four major application areas of smart healthcare, smart retail, smart mobility and smart entertainment developed using 5G infrastructure.
According to statistics, the global medical display market was worth US$2.17 billion in 2020 and is projected to reach US$3.2 billion by 2027. Medical display products are mostly used in image diagnostics (52%); surgical applications such as endoscopy and image transmission (22%); other applications such as electronic signboards, monitors, and tablets account for 18%; and 8% are used in dental medical displays.
New demands include: image recognition and storage, AI-assisted intelligent imaging, remote diagnosis, 5G remote surgery, ultrasound imaging, surgical navigation and simulation, radiology, and intelligent environmental monitoring and care systems, among others. Given the current demands in the medical field due to the global pandemic, digital transformation, and telemedicine, there is an urgent need for relevant solutions to address these pain points.
The SDIA Alliance, in collaboration with TDUA, provides application solutions connecting the medical field and emerging display technologies. This year, the Smart Healthcare SIG has conducted 17 one-on-one matchmaking sessions with medical institutions such as Miaoli Hospital of the Ministry of Health and Welfare, the National Chiao Tung University Smart Healthcare Center, and Taipei Veterans General Hospital. It has also collaborated with institutions like Chang Gung University, Chang Gung Memorial Hospital, Lianxin International Hospital, and the ITRI Biomedical Industry Cross-Domain Integration Experimental Field. The alliance aims to integrate the medical capabilities of its members to establish Taiwanese display technology within the smart healthcare context domestically, and ultimately expand into the international medical market through comprehensive deployment.
